Imagine a zoo. It’s filled with all kinds of animals, from monkeys to elephants to tigers. Now imagine a zookeeper who only has bananas. So that’s all the animals get to eat—bananas. Now, one by one, the animals will no longer thrive, save for the monkeys! Our gut is just like the zoo, home to trillions of bacteria and other microbes that help to digest our food and keep us healthy. The more diverse the gut microbiome, the merrier our bodies!
The food we eat is one of the most important factors influencing the gut bacteria. We can’t only be eating bananas, or much of the friendly gut bacteria won’t survive!
